Does Organic Food Really Have A Higher Nutritional Value?

Have you ever wondered whether there is proof that organic foods have a higher nutritional value compared to conventional ones? Are people who buy organic foods for their nutritional values making the right choice? Lets look at what studies have been conducted to determine whether organic foods have a higher nutritional value.

The French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA) published a Meta study, which compares organic and conventional foods. A Meta study effectively looks at various independent studies and integrates them using statistical analysis to remove variable results and show a trend. This study published in the scientific journal, Agronomy for Sustainable Development, indicated that organic plant products are more nutrient dense, have higher nutritional levels, and contains more antioxidants eg. phenols and salicylic acid, compared to conventional foods. Organic animal products contain more polyunsaturated fatty acids, which protect against heart disease, whilst organic vegetables contain roughly 50% less nitrates which reduces the risk of health problems such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

Further support for the theory that organic foods have a higher nutritional value was found in a comparison study conducted by UK Food Standards Agency. Their study showed that organic foods have higher levels of minerals, proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and antioxidants as indicated by the percentage below.

  • Minerals levels: Copper (8.3%), Magnesium (7.1%), Phosphorous (6%), Potassium (2.5%), Sodium (8.7%), Sulphur (10.5%), Zinc (11.3%)
  • Protein levels (12%)
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids in organic meats and dairy products (2.1 - 27.8%)
  • Antioxidant levels: Phenolic compounds (13.2%), Beta-carotene (53.6%), Flavonoids (38.4%)

Furthermore, research published in the Natural Gardener's Catalog (1995) is another example of the significant difference in mineral levels found in organic and conventional foods.

In conclusion, there is evidence to show that organic foods definitely have multiple nutritional benefits and are better for you. Moreover, they are also free from pesticide residues so they are better quality products in general.

Mop up those free radicals with Berry Radical!

What Are Free Radicals?
You've probably heard of the word 'free radicals' and never really understood what it means. Well, a free radical is a highly reactive, high energy molecules, which causes damage to many cell structures of your body such as DNA, proteins and lipids. This damage is described as oxidation.

Free radicals can be produced within the body by natural biological processes or introduced by environmental factors such as tobacco, industrial pollution, excessive sun exposure, and sub-optimal eating habits. Some of the diseases that are associated with free radical damage includes cancer, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic fatigue.

A good example of oxidation is seen when you cut an apple in half. The flesh is exposed to oxygen and starts to turn brown. A similar phenomenon occurs in our bodies where our cells are continuously exposed to free radical activity. In order to help our bodies resist the damaging effects of oxidation, we need substances known as anti-oxidants to limit this oxidation process and protect our health.

Where Do I Find Antioxidants?
Antioxidants can be found in fruits and vegetables. So make sure you eat several serves daily. You can also vary the types of produce to ensure you receive a wide spectrum of antioxidant compounds. You may like to include foods like nuts, seeds, avocado and extra virgin olive oil into your diet on a regular basis to provide vitamin E and other fat-soluble antioxidants. This will help protect the lipids in the cellular membranes from oxidation.

What Are ORAC Units And How Many Do We Need?
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a standardised measurement of the total antioxidant power of a substance. Antioxidant power is the ability to neutralise oxygen free radicals. So, the more free radicals a substance can absorb, the higher its ORAC score. According to nutritionists, we are to consume around 5000 ORAC units per day to significantly impact antioxidant activity in our body, hence, reducing the damage caused by free radicals. So if you are not eating at least 7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, then your not getting the recommended amount of ORAC units to mop up the free radicals in your body.

How Can Berry Radical Help Me?
Berry Radical has been formulated to contain 9 of the most potent antioxidant ingredients to help mop up those free radicals. Take a look at their ingredients. CLICK HERE!

One teaspoon of Berry Radical (3.5g) contains over 4000 ORAC units. A delicious beverage can be made by blending Berry Radical with hot water and your choice of milk, or adding into your favorite smoothie. Sweeten to taste.

Shopping Habits That Support Against Animal Cruelty

Animals are one of the most beautiful living creatures on earth. Animals have feelings or emotions and are able to express them in various ways. But when it comes to suffering and cruelty, they are unable to vote, object or speak out against violence, which makes them vulnerable to exploitation. There are many people who really love animals and have a strong desire to protect these living creatures from the cruelty inflicted upon them. Non-profit organisations like Animals Australia help protect our animals and educate people on making choices that will support against animal cruelty. They are very active in promoting kindness towards animals.

If you are an animal lover, you can help support against animal cruelty by making simple choices whenever you go shopping for groceries or personal care products.

  • Avoid factory-farmed products
  • Choose cruelty-free vegetarian alternatives eg. mock meat
  • Choose egg alternatives eg. powdered egg substitutes
  • Choose dairy alternatives eg. soy milk and rice milk
  • Choose personal care products that are cruelty-free eg. Miessence certified organics
A good guidance of the various food products that are cruelty-free can be found in here

The online retailer, Growing Gifts by Miller and Brown, proudly supports Animals Australia by creating a unique range of tree and plant gifts for this organisation. For every product purchased with the Animal Australia swing tag, Growing Gifts would donate 30% to their worthy cause.

Growing Gifts can be found at One Stop Australian Green Shop. This green shop also includes a variety of eco-friendly, green products, that help save our planet.
